Professional Development Workshop

On July 29-30, 2016, DCAB hosted a Continuing Education Program (CEP) professional development workshop for interpreters in the State of Hawaii. The guest speaker was Jennifer Johnson. Ms. Johnson has a Master’s Degree in Education and holds several RID credentials including CI, CT, and NIC. She is the designated interpreter for Jane Fernandez, President of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The topic for Friday was, “Ethics, Culture and Language: Managing Our Work Through the Demand Control Schema.” This workshop introduced the concept of Demand-Control Schema with an emphasis on how interpreters can prepare for and make better ethical decisions for everyday situations that may arise while on a job.

On Saturday, Jennifer presented on “The Root of Interpreting: A Day of Discourse Analysis & Translation Studies.” This focused on discourse mapping and how to develop a better understanding of the two target languages through discourse analysis.

Mahalo to Jennifer for her enthusiasm and great resources!
